8 Tips for Effective Communication on Social Media

Social media is an integral part of our daily lives. In 2021, there were no fewer than 4.2 billionactive users*! That shows just how much potential social media holds, and businesses have certainly recognized this.

Showcasing your brand or products on social media has become essential. So you might as well learn how to use these platforms effectively to unlock their full potential.

Maia Consulting shares eight simple tips for communicating effectively on social media using best practices.

1.      Select social media platforms

Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, and the latest addition, Clubhouse…Social media platforms are multiplying, and it’s difficult to maintain an optimal presence across the board. Each social media platform has its own rules and customs.

It is therefore essential to familiarize yourself with them and follow their guidelines in order to communicate and share information effectively. We therefore recommend that you focus your efforts on the two social media platforms most frequently used by your customers and prospects.

2.      Social media: a source of information and entertainment

Of course, social media is a direct channel for communicating with your customers and prospects. Using it to showcase your products or services, share your latest offerings, or keep them informed about your news is a great idea.

However, social media is also a source of entertainment. So be sure to include a touch of humor in your posts. This will help capture your audience’s attention even more and make your message more memorable.

That doesn't mean, however, that you have to stray from your style. Your company's DNA remains the guiding principle of your communication.

3.      The Power of Videos

Social media platforms are virtual spaces where large numbers of people, driven byemotions, come together. A video is therefore the ideal medium for sharing your message. It will allow you to tell your story while evoking emotions in your audience. As a result, your content will be more easily remembered.

Keep in mind that these videos should be fairly short, ranging from about fifteen seconds to two minutes. If they go beyond that length, your audience is likely to lose interest and not watch your entire message. Not only will you fail to achieve your goal, which is certainly detrimental, but you’ll also have wasted time and money producing content that won’t be watched in its entirety.

Also, be sure to add captions to all your videos so that your audience can read the audio text. After all, these millions of users access their favorite social media platforms on various devices and in a wide variety of locations. As a result, the volume on their devices is often turned down to a minimum or even turned off entirely!

4.      Visual Identity: An Essential Guiding Principle

When you create content that has taken time, thought, and creativity, you certainly want it to be immediately associated with your product, service, or brand. It would be frustrating if it ended up benefiting one of your competitors due to a lack of clarity. It is therefore essentialto incorporate your visual identity into your messages so that they can be immediately associated with your brand.

It's not about spending a fortune on complex graphics that work across multiple platforms, but simply about pairing your creations with your logo and some pleasant, royalty-free music.

5.      Foster Engagement

Promoting your product or expertise to drive sales is, of course, the ultimate goal of your posts. However, as we’ve mentioned before, social media is, above all, about users who want to stay informed but also interact. It’s therefore important to include posts in your content strategy that encourage interaction.

Conducting polls, asking for feedback, introducing your team, or giving a behind-the-scenes look at your business by sharing photos and videos are just a few ideas that will help you build engagement and generate responses.

Reactions go hand in hand with comments. Pay close attention to these messages related to your post. It’s important that your community feels heard. So be sure to take the time to answer any questions you’re asked.

6.      Schedule Your Posts

It’s recommended to post regularly on social media to build a connection with your audience. It’s therefore common to feel overwhelmed by all this content creation when you have to manage your entire business at the same time.

We therefore recommend that you set aside a specific time slot to create your content and then schedule it. On the one hand, this will save you time because once your mind gets into a creative flow, you’ll be more productive. And on the other hand, all you’ll have to do is schedule your posts using the various tools available to you. No more feeling the pressure to post immediately or worrying about writer’s block.

In addition, this planning will allow you to reach your audience at the exact moment they’re active on the social media platform in question. On LinkedIn, you’ll likely choose to post on weekdays early in the morning, at the end of the day, or during lunchtime, while on Facebook, you’ll want to focus on late morning**.

Another benefit of planning is that you release your information in small doses, thereby avoiding repetition that could annoy your audience and cause them to stop following you on social media.

7.      The Importance of Hashtags

Today, almost all posts include hashtags, even though they originated on Twitter. A hashtag consists of the # symbol followed by a word or a string of words without spaces. They help categorize posts, making it easy to find all posts that use the same hashtag.

However, their use varies depending on which social media platform you're posting on. While you can use up to about ten hashtags on Instagram, on LinkedIn you're limited to a maximum of three.

8.      Think “Mobile First”

When you think about your posts, you’re probably sitting comfortably at your desk, typing away on your keyboard in front of your big computer screen. But is that really the case for your audience? Not at all! Most of them are likely out on the street, in a waiting room, in a car, or sitting on a bench in a park.

So forget about the big screen and your community mainly interacts with you through their smartphones. Be sure toadapt your posts and images to the specific screen sizesof these devices. Fonts should be legible enough, and image formats should be appropriate.
